Our three-year Key Stage 3 curriculum builds carefully on the knowledge, skills and foundations developed at Key Stage 2, ensuring that students make a confident and successful transition into secondary school.
We place great importance on helping students feel settled, known and supported from the moment they join us. Our curriculum is designed not only to develop strong subject knowledge, but also to nurture curiosity, confidence, resilience and a love of learning.
Personal development and careers education are woven throughout our curriculum, helping students to understand themselves, explore future opportunities and make informed choices about their next steps.
When students join the school, they are able to express a preference for their modern foreign language, giving them a sense of ownership and excitement as they begin their secondary journey.
In Year 9, students begin to think more carefully about the subjects they enjoy, the areas in which they are confident and the possible routes they may want to follow in the future. We support them through this important stage with clear advice, opportunities to ask questions, and guidance from staff who know them well. Families are also included in the process so that students can make thoughtful, informed choices as they prepare for Key Stage 4.
At Key Stage 4, students build on the strong foundations developed during Key Stage 3 and begin to study some subjects in greater depth. Alongside the core curriculum, students follow GCSE subjects that allow them to develop their interests and start shaping their next steps.
Our aim is for students to leave Key Stage 4 with much more than a set of qualifications. We want them to grow in confidence, independence and ambition, with the skills and experiences they need for further study, training or employment.
Careers education and personal development continue to play an important role in Key Stage 4, helping students to understand the opportunities available to them and to make positive choices about their future.
As we develop our Post-16 offer on site, our aim is to provide students with exciting opportunities to continue their education within a setting where they are known, supported and encouraged to succeed. Whether students choose to remain with us or move on to another provider, we are committed to ensuring they are fully prepared for their next step. Through high-quality guidance, strong relationships and a curriculum that keeps future opportunities open, we want every young person to leave us with the confidence, qualifications and ambition to pursue the pathway that is right for them.
At Roade Village Academy, we believe that learning should reach far beyond the classroom. We are committed to giving all students equal opportunities to broaden their experiences, develop their confidence and build their cultural capital through a rich and varied programme of extra-curricular opportunities.
Across the curriculum, students take part in experiences that help bring their learning to life. In French and Spanish, for example, students are able to immerse themselves in the culture of the languages they study through activities such as food tasting sessions. In subjects such as Geography, History and Religious Education, learning is extended through visiting speakers, trips, visits and experiences that help students understand the world beyond their seat in the classroom.
We offer a wide range of trips, visits and activities, both within the UK and further afield, giving students the chance to explore new places, encounter different perspectives and make lasting memories. These experiences often deepen students’ understanding of the topics they study and help them see the relevance of their learning in the wider world.
Clubs are also a big part of life at Roade Village Academy. Students can choose from a broad and ever-growing range of activities, from sports clubs to Warhammer Club, with new opportunities developing all the time in response to students’ interests. We encourage every student to get involved, try something new and discover talents or passions they may not yet know they have.
We are particularly proud of our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, which has become a popular and character-building experience for many of our students over recent years. Through teamwork, resilience and challenge, students develop valuable skills that will support them well beyond school.
The performing arts also have a special place in our school community, and we are always excited to see which production will take to the stage next. Whether students are performing, supporting backstage or cheering from the audience, these opportunities help build confidence, creativity and a strong sense of belonging.
